Stimulus Activity #2

Family Ties

Objectives:

1.      To examine the relationship with family members since the divorce of parents

2.      To develop positive personal relationships among family members

3.      To interact and support other children experiencing divorce in their family

Activity: Group members will be given a blank sheet of paper and markers.  On the board, examples of “family ties” will be drawn.  Group members will then be asked to draw a picture of their family, allowing each member to creatively depict their family.  Then, group members will be asked to draw a colored line to each family member reflecting the type of relationship they currently have.  Here are some examples of “family ties”:

____________________   close relationship

____________________   distant relationship

____________________   confused relationship

____________________   hostile or angry relationship

After group members have completed the depictions of their families and the types of relationships they have with each family member, they will be asked to share their family portrait with the group.  Questions will include:

  1. How has this relationship changed from where it was before your parents’ divorce?
  2. Why do you feel the relationship is this way now?
  3. How would you like the relationship to look?
  4. What can you do to change it?  What can your family do to change it?
